The road to Milford Sound has been re-opened under restricted conditions after it was damaged in last week’s avalanches.
Last Tuesday's severe storm in Fiordland caused 20 avalanches on the Milford road and a landslide on the Hollyford road.
The NZ Transport Agency urged drivers to use care along the route.
‘‘Extreme care is needed due to pavement damage and the narrow carriage way on some sections of the road, and motorists should allow extra travel time to account of this.’’
The road has been closed overnight for resurfacing between 5.30pm and 7.30am tomorrow.
Downer avalanche programme manager Wayne Carran said workers were clearing about 20 avalanches, a massive landslide and a boulder weighing up to 50 tonnes from the road.
The avalanches were caused by heavy rain hitting fresh snow, he said.
