Workmen replace a copper panel on top of St Mary's basilica, in Invercargill.

A panel on the top of St Mary's basilica was replaced today after an old panel was blown from the roof in strong winds.

The two workmen who replaced the copper panel needed to be crane lifted 35 meters into the sky to fit the new $550 tile to the dome's roof.

Builder John Mulholland said the panel came off about 10 days ago.

"The panel had been loose for a wee while, but came off in all that wind a week and half ago."
