Young sports talents show their stuff
Young athletes have shown off their skills during the Sport Southland annual interschool competition at Surrey Park.
About 500 pupils from Aurora College, Te Wharekura O Arowhenua, Fernworth, Newfield Park, St Joseph's and St Patrick's schools in Invercargill and St Teresa's School in Bluff had been practising league and softball skills for eight weeks before yesterday's tournament, as part of the KiwiSport 4 Sport Delivery programme.
Sport Southland primary school sport advisor Jane Naylor said the competition was a good way for children to put the skills they had learnt during the programme into practice. It was also an opportunity for pupils who might not be able to otherwise afford to play sport to get involved.
Southland Rams player Eddie Hei Hei, who acted as league development officer, called in some of his Rams team-mates to help senior Te Wharekura O Arowhenua pupils referee the league matches.
Many of the softballers were also dressed in pink to encourage more girls to take up the sport.
