The 29-year-old man who downloaded objectionable material, including child pornography, is Invercargill accountant Samuel Joseph Barton.

Barton was sentenced in the Invercargill District Court by Judge Kevin Phillips on Friday and granted interim name suppression until 5pm yesterday.

He was sentenced to five months' community detention, 200 hours' community work and 12 months' intensive supervision for 10 charges of possessing objectionable material between December 21, 2009, and August 28 last year.

During Barton's sentencing, Judge Phillips said a pen drive that contained child pornography was found at Barton's former house. A search was carried out by police at his new home.

Barton was co-operative and had shown police where the objectionable material was.

Compact discs and DVDs were seized and some were found to contain child pornography, Judge Phillips said.

Barton had accessed websites and downloaded about 2000 photographic and 40 video files of females naked or dressed provocatively.

Some were as young as 6, Judge Phillips said.

Barton acknowledged the discs and pen drives were his and that he had downloaded and stored the pictures and videos.

Judge Phillips said Barton had received private counselling after his arrest, had not had computer access for a year, and had been co-operative with police.
