Teachers give up holiday for learning
Hundreds of southern teachers sacrificed the start of school holidays to learn more about their craft.
The Invercargill Licensing Trust-sponsored I Love Teaching conference began at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill yesterday, with 265 teachers registering for the two-day event.
Keynote speakers Jason Ohler, Hine Waitere, Sam Cawthorn, Wilson McCaskill and Lane Clark discussed a variety of subjects, including digital learning and story telling, processes of memory and the future of teaching, during the conference's opening yesterday.
United States-based speaker, researcher and teacher Jason Ohler spoke about the use of digital technology in the classroom.
Teachers had to feel comfortable enough with multimedia to be able to critique and grade multimedia assignments in the same way they did with more traditional assessments like essays, he said.
As well as the educational speakers, comedian Michele A'Court also appeared at the conference, as MC.
The conference continues today with a series of workshops led by keynote speakers.
