Invercargill whitebaiter Mike Joyce was on the hunt for the elusive bait on Waihopai River yesterday.
The current was strong and murky yesterday, pushing debris downstream.
Mr Joyce, who at noon had caught nothing but rubbish in his net, said it had been a very, very slow season compared with previous years.
It depended on the wind, tides and the Moon, he said.
A whitebaiter since the 1980s, Mr Joyce said he used to fill his 10-litre bucket with whitebait in about 40 minutes in Southland rivers.
Now, "we've had our off-and-on moments", he said.
