Te Anau police were on the hunt for a serial burglar this week - before learning a family friend had climbed through a house window to retrieve some items.
Constable Glenn Matheson, of Te Anau, said a window at a Puketahi Dr house was opened and the house had possibly been entered.
"It's a heads-up to the community that there's been a [second] burglary in the same area in the last few weeks and we want to ensure people keep their premises locked up, Mr Matheson said.
However, Te Anau police rang The Southland Times back an hour later to say the "crime" had been solved. A friend of the homeowners' son had broken in to retrieve some items.
