Steve-O needs help for his shield mission
Mascot wants to make it to PukekoheNATHAN BURDON
Steve-O the Stag is taking matters into his own hands as he tries to get to Pukekohe for next Friday's Ranfurly Shield challenge against Counties Manukau.
Rugby Southland's budget does not stretch to getting the popular mascot to the south Auckland venue for the Stags' final round-robin game of the season, so Steve-O is hoping to cover the costs through fundraising.
The Stags will be trying to win the Ranfurly Shield for the third time since 2009, while the Tana Umaga-coached Counties side can lock it away for the summer if they mount a successful defence.
Several of the union's sponsors have promised to get in behind the venture, but Steve-O was also passing a bucket around at last night's game against Hawke's Bay and was scheduled to be pouring beers at the Speight's Ale House after the game.
Fundraising buckets will be left at the Invercargill branch of Hynds Pipes in Bond St for the next few days for anyone wanting to make a contribution.
