High wind warning for Southland
Southland can expect gale force winds up to 80kmh today as a low pressure system builds over the Tasman Sea.
MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said Southland would receive the tail end of winds with severe weather warnings issued for Canterbury and Wellington.
"There will be patches of rain in the morning but it should still be quite balmy with a top of 20 and warm winds coming from the north west," he said.
Mr Corbett said tomorrow would be cooler, with a top of 13 degrees Celcius, as the wind shifted into a definite westerly.
Most of the intense weather should have subsided by the time people knocked off for the long Labour Weekend.
Scattered showers and patches of fine weather were predicted from Saturday through to Monday.
