A 20-year-old Winchester man died while hunting in the Rock and Pillar Range in Central Otago during the weekend.
In a statement today, police say family members became concerned after James Peter Barry Tuite, who had set out on a hunting trip alone on Friday afternoon in the Waipiata area, failed to return on Friday evening when he was expected.
The alarm was raised with Police about 11.30pm on Friday evening.
Because of the nature of the terrain in the area where Mr Tuite had been hunting, the official search was planned to start on Saturday morning.
However Mr Tuite's body was located by a family member early on Saturday morning.
Mr Tuite's family regularly go hunting on the land and know the area well.
Sergeant Simon Paget, of Cromwell Police, said it appeared that Mr Tuite's quad motorbike had crashed in an area of steep terrain.
The matter has now been referred to the coroner.
