OPINION: Surely it's no coincidence that June, when we orbit into cancer, which is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac and goes from June 20 to July 22, is also a big month of awareness for cancer as a disease.

It's bowel cancer awareness month - see Milton woman Renee Wallace's story about her ongoing battle with New Zealand's biggest killer.

And you will have read about the Child Cancer Foundation's Wig Wednesday appeal, and Tapanui schoolboy Jock Davie's quest to stay well.

As a sign, cancer people are typically very loyal and able to empathise with other people's pain and suffering.

Now, you might not believe in all that stuff but there's no doubt that both Renee and Jock share another trait - the unselfish ability to share their story in a positive way so that people can draw hope and inspiration.

Most people know someone who has had a brush, died, or is undergoing treatment for cancer.

So when you're looking up into the sky this week, send up a prayer to the constellation of cancer.
