Decision on fate of old buildings unknown
The resource consent hearing into the fate of two historic hospital buildings continues this afternoon.
The Southern District Health Board applied to the Invercargill City Council to demolish the old administration block and nurses' home on the Kew Rd site and replace it with a new centre that will house hospital administration staff and clinical education services.
The hearing began in September, but was adjourned after the SDHB and Historic Places Trust were asked to supply further information and research.
The Historic Places Trust described the collection of buildings as "the most intact group of hospital buildings dating from the first half of the 20th century".
The trust said some individual hospital buildings of considerable age still existed in other parts of the country, but none matched the collective value and coherence of those at Southland Hospital.
A decision on whether the hearing panel will adjourn or return with a decision is expected later this afternoon.
