Cutting edge technology for new ride
JOHN EDENS IN QUEENSTOWN
A Queenstown business has opened the first interactive thrill ride and simulator of its kind in New Zealand.
The tourist attraction, the XD Dark Ride and XD Theatre in Earl St, is also the first such amusement ride and movie simulator in the southern hemisphere.
Cutting edge and award-winning technology gives punters 3D stereoscopic glasses, surround sound and an immersive experience strapped into motion-sensitive seats or gaming in an interactive environment, shooting zombies and other scenarios.
The XD Dark Ride is one of only seven such set-ups in the world and offers multi-dimensional big screen gaming style fun for customers while the XD Theatre offers a kinetic and visual thrill ride.
In the theatre - billed as a 6D movie simulator - customers wearing 3D glasses strap into powered seats with movement sensors and zoom through a variety of landscapes at high speed.
Seats can generate 400 movements per second and forces of up to 2G.
After securing the New Zealand distribution director Mark Keenan sought rights from the Quebec-based company and spent three years setting up business.
''I think there are a lot of fabulous attractions in Queenstown and we saw the viability of this and the price point of it filling a gap and providing something a bit different,'' Mr Keenan said.
