Vibrant Invercargill will be spreading Christmas cheer in the CBD from today, which includes paying for parking.

Vibrant town centre manger Joan Scarlet said her ''little Christmas helpers'' would be offering to pay for parking in the CBD from today until Tuesday, but excluding Sunday.

The helpers would also give balloons to children and offer to help retailers with promotional activity on the streets.

It would be a surprise for retailers, who did not know anything about it, she said.

This was the first year Vibrant had spread cheer but the organisation had always wanted to do something for the festive season, she said.

''It has been in the pipeline for a few years now, so this year we decided to go for it and make people happy.''

The helpers would also help to raise awareness of the Vibrant brand, she said.
