Waikaka school pupil Luci Butler has created a piece of writing that has earned her second place in the Beyond this Story intermediate schools' national writing competition.
The competition involved students writing a story based on a current or historical event in New Zealand.
The competition received about 400 entries from 40 different schools and the winning stories will be published next year in an anthology titled Beyond this Story.
Luci's story was based on a storm that occurred in Dunedin in the 1800s.
Titled Unwanted Water, the story was 750 words long and had taken her about two weeks to write.
Waikaka senior class teacher Lisa Miller said Luci's success was well deserved.
''It was an amazing story.''
When Luci's mother Mandy got the email last Tuesday she ran in to wake Luci up.
''I thought I was getting a day off school,'' Luci said.
She couldn't believe she had placed second and was really happy with the result.
''We weren't even thinking about it, the email just come through randomly,'' Mrs Butler said.
The stories in the year 8 competition were judged by author Susan Brocker, who was one of Luci's favourite authors.
Luci will travel to Tauranga in March for the launch of the anthology.
