Police in Central Otago need the public's help after a crashed vehicle that damaged a vineyard near Alexandra was removed from the scene.

Senior Constable Michael Colligan, of Alexandra, said it appeared the vehicle smashed through fencing at Grasshopper Rock vineyard on Earnscleugh Rd sometime overnight between Thursday and yesterday.

He said the vehicle crashed through fencing and damaged posts, cabling and vines.

"We would like to hear from anybody who was on Earnscleugh Rd. They've done quite a bit of damage and they've spent time there, they removed the vehicle."

Police recovered wreckage and damaged material from the crash scene and an auto-wreckers in Queenstown was asked to help identify the make. Police believe they are looking for a 1990s-era Honda vehicle.

Anyone with information about the vehicle, or anyone who noticed a damaged vehicle meeting the description, is asked to contact police.
