The Southland Armed Offenders Squad was called out to a property near Mataura this morning.

Southern District Police deployment coordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said Southland police were alerted to a potentially serious family violence incident at 7.30am.

The area around a farm house 7km west of Mataura was cordoned off until the squad arrived and cleared the area at 10.30am.

A 24-year-old man was now in custody and would be charged with making threats toward a woman who lived at the same address, he said.

No one was injured and the cordons had been lifted, he said.
