Burglars have been active targeting a large number of Invercargill homes in the new year, police say.
Detective senior sergeant Mike Bowman, of Invercargill CIB, said some of the burgled homes belonged to people on holiday during the festive season.
Mr Bowman, in a press release, said police had attended a large number of house burglaries during the past few days, particularly in the Hawthorndale and Appleby.
''It is clear that a number of these homes have been broken into during the hours of daylight.''
He urged the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods and ring police if they knew who the burglars were or were offered stolen property.
Mr Bowman did not immediately return calls to clarify exactly how many homes had been burgled in the city.
