Alexandra police need the public's help to identify two men captured on CCTV footage.

Between 12.30am and 1am on Monday, a fire was deliberately lit in the male public toilets in the Central Stories Museum building in Centennial Ave.

The fire caused extensive damage to one of the cubicles and police released CCTV images from outside the block in an effort to identify the men.

Constable Rowan Williams said it was fortunate that the fire did not take hold and cause more significant damage or pose a risk to life.

"We are appealing to the community for assistance in the hope of resolving this matter.

"I encourage people to look carefully at the images, as it appears one of the pair is wearing a cast on his right forearm, and talk to their friends."

Anyone with information can contact the police on (03) 4402500. Information can be provided anonymously to 0800 555111.
