Invercargill police are appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously assaulted behind Pak 'n Save early yesterday.

Sergeant Peter Graham said the man was taken to Southland Hospital after being knocked unconscious about 1am.

It was thought that the occupants of a car that pulled up at the intersection of Forth and Conon streets may have seen the attack, Mr Graham said.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Detective Scott Mackenzie at the Invercargill Police Station.
