It might not be known for its soaring temperatures, but if you want a cheaper and less crowded summer holiday next year, figures suggest you should head down south.

During the holiday period between December 20 and January 5, holiday home rental website Bookabach recorded 50,397 stays at baches and cribs nationwide.

The most popular regions overall were Northland, attracting 15.2 per cent of all visitors, followed by Auckland (13.1), the Coromandel (11.9) and Bay of Plenty (11.3).

These were also some of the most expensive regions.

Baches in the Bay of Plenty cost on average $270 a night, Auckland $252 and Northland $244.

While accommodation in the luxurious Queenstown-Lakes region came out most expensive at $303 a night, neighbouring South Island regions were the most affordable in the country.

A stay in Otago cost on average $129 a night, the West Coast $130 and Southland $145.

These regions were also among the least popular - West Coast and Southland attracted only 1.3 per cent and 1.4 per cent of visitors respectively.

The data could be useful for those already thinking about where to go next Christmas and New Year, Bookabach general manager Peter Miles said.

"Provided you can get there easily, West Coast and Southland are two great options for budget-conscious holidaymakers."

The average total cost of a holiday was $1084 and the average stay was five nights, Bookabach found.
