A 2-year-old girl has drowned in a pond on a dairy farm in Otapiri, in Central Southland.

Police said the young girl was reported missing by her family about 7.30pm.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Invercargill, said police responded to the call along with the Browns Volunteer Fire Brigade.

There had been an extensive search by the girl’s family and neighbours before emergency services and a member of the police dog squad joined the efforts to find the girl.

She was found at 8.30pm in a pond on the farm, Mr Terry said.

Police officers on the scene performed CPR on the toddler until ambulance officers arrived but she could not be revived.
