Riverton baby dies from injuries
@devlincolle: A three-month-old Riverton boy has died after being taken to hospital with serious injuries on Monday night.
A police investigation is under way after it was reported the baby had fallen at his Riverton home.
He had been flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland on Monday night in critical condition.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman said the baby died early this morning as a result of the injuries.
Police are continuing their investigation into the baby's death, both on behalf of the coroner but also to determine whether there was any criminal culpability, Mr Bowman said.
About six police staff and an ESR team are continuing a forensic examination at the Riverton house that emergency services were called to on Monday evening where the baby was found with serious injuries.
"The event is a tragedy and police extend their sympathies to the family involved," Mr Bowman said.
Emergency services were called to the Havelock St home at 7.25pm on Monday and told a baby boy had suffered serious injuries and was unresponsive.
Riverton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Helen Bull said it was a medical assist call and the Riverton firefighters, who were first on the scene, found the baby unconscious on the lounge floor.
"As soon as we arrived we started to perform CPR," Ms Bull said.
An ambulance arrived soon after, she said.
Two firefighters went in the ambulance with the baby to meet another ambulance on the way to Southland Hospital.
"We got a pulse close to the hospital," Ms Bull said.
The baby was later flown to Starship Hospital, in Auckland.
Mr Bowman said the investigation was at an early stage and police were trying to determine how the child came to fall and if there were any suspicious circumstances.
Neighbours said they did not see the people who lived in the house very often.
