The names of a toddler and teenage girl who drowned in separate incidents have been released.
A 2-year-old girl who drowned in a pond on a dairy farm in Otapiri, Central Southland has been named as Irene Nath, and the 13-year-old Balclutha girl who died after a boat capsized in the Catlins yesterday as Eluned Jane Finney.
Acting sergeant Steve Griffiths of Balclutha said the Owaka search and rescue team was currently retrieving the boat from the water.
On Tuesday night, Irene drowned in a pond on a dairy farm in Otapiri, Central Southland. The toddler was reported missing by her family about 7.30pm.
Emergency services attended the call and after an extensive search, Irene was found at 8.40pm in a duck pond on the farm. CPR was performed but she was unresponsive.
WorkSafe New Zealand have said it will investigate the incident.
