He has previously been an elected member of the Southern District Health Board, the Otago Polytechnic Council and the Otago Community Hospice Trust. He is a member of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail Charitable Trust, chairs the Jolendale Park Charitable Trust and the board of Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.
He has a PhD in geology and is one of only two New Zealand-resident US-trained Baldrige Examiners, having more than 20 years' experience in business excellence assessment and consulting. The deputy chairman is Alex Huffadine.
