The Winton Volunteer Fire Brigade has been called to a hazardous substance spill in town.

Firefighters in hazard protection gear are at the RD1 farm supply store in the Winton-Hedgehope Highway, Southland.

Winton Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Graham Beggs said it was not serious and staff at RD1 had the situation under control when the crew arrived with  the hazardous substance gear.

A container with herbicide split, he said.

The fire brigade was called to make sure the clean up was done properly.
