A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck 85km west of Snares Islands, 235 km south-west of Tuatapere, Southland, tonight.
The "severe" quake rumbled in at 8.54pm and was at a depth of 5km, according to GeoNet.
Police communications said there had been no reports of damage.
