The southern region was exposed to long periods of westerly winds in January, new data shows.

The data from Niwa, compiled by 45S Weather Services, shows gales were recorded on 10 days in the southern region in January. But anticyclones started to spread across the South Island late in the month with more settled weather.

The rainfall for the month was slightly lower than normal despite regular showers. The data shows the south had 95.4mm of rainfall against an average of 112mm.

Temperatures were well below average but the south experienced 187.2 sunshine hours against an average of 185.

The coldest day - lowest afternoon maximum temperature - was 13degC on the 23rd and the warmest night - the highest overnight minimum temperature - was 14.1C on the 16th.

Earlier this month, climate scientist Jim Salinger said every season had a personality; January was stormy, February was expected to warm up and March was expected to be a "cracker".

The start of February has bought sunshine. According to MetService, Invercargill had a high of 16C on Saturday, 18C yesterday and an expected 21C today.

Gore reached a high of 21C yesterday and an expected 24C today. Queenstown reached a high of 23C yesterday and an expected 28C today while Alexandra reached a high of 25C yesterday and an expected 32C today.
