@devlincolleThree men were arrested near Mossburn yesterday following a police chase after allegedly stealing fuel.

Constable David Leach of Lumsden said the driver of a Holden vehicle drove off from the Te Anau Caltex Station about 10am, allegedly without paying for fuel. Police tried to stop the driver on the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway, near Centre Hill, and a police pursuit started. Most of the chase took place on rural roads.

''I knew there were staff conducting road works in Mossburn and the vehicle was fleeing at a dangerous speed, so I decided to abandon the pursuit for safety reasons,'' Mr Leach said.

The Holden was later seen by police on Chewings Rd and the pursuit started again.

Mr Leach said he had a hunch where it was going and contacted Te Anau police, who used a tyre deflation device near Mt Hamilton Rd, which immobilised the vehicle.

All three occupants were arrested and face theft and driving charges, including reckless and dangerous driving.

They will appear in Invercargill District Court on Friday.
