Country volleyball captain Melissa Johnston and Town volleyball captain Kelly MacKenzie shared some pre-match banter earlier this week.

It will be game on tomorrow as the annual Hawea Town versus Country Challenge takes place in Lake Hawea.

Event organiser Colleen Carr said the event, in its ninth year, will see about 350 people taking part in a series of competitions including volleyball, petanque, golf, bowls, cricket, ultimate frisbee and netball.

Last year the country side, those who live in the catchment of Hawea Flat School, Johns Creek, Maungawera Valley and Dublin Bay and wear red, won the competition.

However, town, those who live in the Lake Hawea township and don blue, were leading the points board 5 to 3.

Mrs Carr said every year funds raised from the event went to Hawea Flat School.

However, this year the school has asked for the proceeds to go to the Crotty family after an eight-year-old family member and school pupil suffered head injuries in a bouncy castle accident in Pisa Mooring on January 23.

It will kick off tonight with a quiz night at the Lake Hawea Hotel but the main events would take place tomorrow, with a full day of activities.
