Southland group taking classic car road trip
A classic Kiwi road trip - and with classic cars.
Six vintage cars owned by Southlanders will leave Stirling Pt today bound for Cape Reinga in a cross-country journey a year in the making.
Organiser Olly Olsson, of Winton, said the return trip was something he had always wanted to do.
"It's been done many times before, of course, it's just that I haven't done it myself. There's no real reason, it wasn't on my bucket list or anything, I just wanted to do it."
So he put the idea to the Southland branch of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club a year ago to see if anyone else was interested. Owners of five other vintage cars put their hands up, including one couple from the Gore branch, and now the group of retirees is ready to hit the road.
The group will travel 150km to 300km each day taking in the sights along the way, with the trip expected to take four and a half weeks.
