LATEST: A man has died after his car went off the road and caught fire on Lindis Pass, in Central Otago.

Southern Fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said emergency services were still at the scene at 7.15pm.

Mr Norris said just one car was involved in the crash and it had appeared to have gone off the road and caught fire.

The fire had spread to vegetation, which firefighters were dousing, he said.

A Southern police communications spokesman confirmed a crash happened on the pass about 5.40pm.

It happened on the Tarras side of the pass, near Elliotts Bridge.

The serious crash unit was on its way to investigate, he said.
