The Metservice has a storm warning in force for coastal Southland and Southland Regional Harbourmaster Kevin O'Sullivan is advising boaties to secure their moorings.
The advisory applies to boaties with moorings anywhere along the southern coast from Fiordland to the Catlins, including Stewart Island.
Expect north-west winds to 40 knots, rising to 55 knots. The seas will become high for a time with south-west swells to 4 metres.
The wind will change to south-west and ease to 35 knots this evening.
