Police were confronted with a man wielding a softball bat at a Balclutha house last night, before the man fled the scene.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said police were called to a Balclutha address just before 9pm, after a 34-year-old man began smashing items in the house because of a "family related" incident.

However, when they arrived the man was "waving" a softball bat at them, he said.

The man then ran to the back of the section, believed with a knife, and could not be found by police, Mr Aitken said.

Police dogs were sent to Balclutha last night from Dunedin, to help search for the man, he said.
