An Invercargill Prison inmate has been taken to hospital after being injured during an alleged assault this morning.
Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Invercargill, said two inmates were involved in the incident, with one requiring medical attention.
The man was taken to Southland Hospital with serious injuries, Mr Terry said.
Acting Invercargill Prison manager Glenda Mitchell confirmed an incident took place between two prisoners in Invercargill Prison.
Corrections officers responded and immediately contained the incident, she said.
Medical staff were called and one prisoner has been taken to hospital to receive further treatment.
No staff were injured, she said.
Police have been informed and are investigating.
