A Fonterra dairy tanker rolled near Otautau this morning spilling more than 1000 litres of milk along the roadside.
A fire service communications spokesman said Otautau firefighters were called to attend a rolled tanker and trailer along Otautau-Tuatapere Rd, about 16km from Otautau, before 2am.
The driver was safely out of the vehicle when fire trucks arrived, but the tanker was leaking milk, the spokesman said.
Firefighters helped contain the leak, which totalled between 1200 and 1300 litres of milk, and the road was reopened about 7am.
Environment Southland had been notified about the incident, he said.
