Six fishermen have been rescued after their boat ran aground in Chalky Inlet on the Fiordland coastline.

The 19.8m Paragon got into trouble and began taking on water about 2.20pm this afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Matt Scoles said a fellow fishing boat, the Karisa, went to the aid of the stricken Paragon and her six-man crew.

''It ended up being a salvage job with the Paragon tied up and towed to Sealers Bay on Chalky Island by the crew of the Karisa,'' he said.

All crew members were safe, he said.

An assessment of the damage to the boat would be done when the boats reached land, Scoles said.

The coastguard and Invercargill based search and rescue team had been notified and were monitoring the situation, he said.
