Soper wins Labour candidacy
Lesley Soper has been selected as the Invercargill Labour Party candidate for the 2014 general election.
The Labour Party reopened nominations for the Invercargill electorate in January, citing the retirement of National MP Eric Roy.
A selection meeting held yesterday saw her go up against Michael Gibson.
About 200 members of the Labour Party and unions affiliated to it attended the meeting and a floor and panel vote both opted for Ms Soper.
She said it was great members still had confidence in her and she would get to work on her campaign straight away.
Labour Party president Moira Coatsworth said it was good to see a contested selection because it was important to have the strongest candidate who would listen and speak clearly on provincial issues.
The Labour Party had strong policies for the region and the large crowd who came to vote reflected the interest in them, she said.
Mr Gibson, who had previously said he wanted to rejuvenate Labour in Invercargill and overhaul the party, could not be reached for comment last night.
