Double celebration for milestones
Gorge Road and the district are throwing a double celebration this weekend to commemorate two important milestones.
Gorge Road and Districts Schools celebrate their 125th jubilee, while the area is marking its 150th anniversary.
Jubilee committee chairman Mark Hamill said the weekend was the product of 18 months' planning from a "great team" of people.
About 400 people had registered for the event, which runs today and tomorrow.
Organisers were very happy with that number, which had grown steadily during the past few weeks as excitement brewed, he said.
"Six weeks ago we had 150 people registered, numbers just kept rolling in."
Early celebrations began last night with a meet and greet in the Gorge Road Community Centre, while today sees the formal opening with cake cutting, time capsules and school photographs.
A banquet is also on tonight at the Invercargill Workingmen's Club.
Tomorrow, Gorge Road will be partially shut down as trucks, vintage cars and floats parade down the road.
