Southland's youngest residents are being encouraged to lace up their sports shoes at the annual duathlon.

Otatara Plunket spokeswoman Suzanne Hotton said the event was popular, with dozens of children taking part in previous years. The organisation was expecting more than 50 children this year.

Children were encouraged to dress up and decorate their bikes for the day, with lots of prizes to give away, Mrs Hotton said.

Entry is $2 per person and the duathlon will be followed by a sausage sizzle and prizegiving.
