Worldly delicacies aplenty at food festival
Southlanders swapped their usual sandwiches for German sausage, sushi and potatoes on a stick at the Southland Multicultural Food Festival.
Hungry punters poured into the fifth annual festival on Saturday, at the new ILT Stadium Southland. Nineteen stalls selling everything from cupcakes, kebabs and hangi food to cuisine from India, Tonga, Samoa, China and Malaysia were accompanied by music and dance performances by cultural groups.
Festival co-ordinator Violet Stewart said more than 3000 people attended.
The move to the stadium had enabled the festival to be bigger and better, with more room for stalls and visitors.
The festival was a great opportunity for Southlanders to branch out in their eating, as the region did not have a food court where diners could experience multicultural food, Ms Stewart said.
"It's good to bring people from all different cultures together to eat food ... it's just great for the community to come together."
