Southland Boys' High School marked World Home Economics Day with a return to old-style comforts.

Year 6 classes from Waihopai School were invited to the high school's catering room for a demonstration on how to make an old family favourite dessert - cheese cakes.

Southland Boys' High School catering and hospitality teacher Scott Richardson said the presentation was about equipping students with knowledge. There had been a shift in perception during the past few years and old-style goods were coming back into favour, he said.

"It's not come full circle but it's definitely coming back again."

The recipe he demonstrated was shown to him by his grandmother, he said.

World Home Economics Day was marked worldwide yesterday. This year's theme was empowering individuals, families and communities though home economics.
