Staff at Wanaka New World were delighted to learn that the winner of a $1 million Lotto prize sold at the store was a local.
"We are delighted - really excited," spokeswoman Adrienne Taylor told The Southland Times after news the winners had gone to Auckland to claim their prize.
According to a statement from Lotto, the winner was in bed reading when her partner called from another room that someone in the resort town had won.
She checked her ticket, and her partner double-checked it, before they celebrated.
It wasn't the first time her numbers had come up, but the last time she had not bought a ticket.
"I couldn't believe it. I never forget my ticket now," she said.
"We'll keep working, but it feels like we're closer to retirement now."
