A Te Anau resident felt a brief shake tonight after a moderate earthquake.

The 4.3 magnitude quake struck 60km west of Te Anau at 10.16pm tonight at a depth of 16km.

GeoNet described its intensity as moderate and 12 people had reported it.

The Te Anau resident said he heard the earthquake coming and felt a brief shake, describing it as one medium bang.
