Fatal truck accident in Northern Southland
A man has been killed on a Northern Southland property after the fertilizer spreader truck he was operating overturned.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said emergency services were called to a property on the Te Anau Mossburn Highway at 10.20am after a report was received about the incident.
When emergency services arrived at the scene the man had already died, Aitken said.
A witness at the scene, earlier this morning, said the truck was upside down and a helicopter was waiting.
A canvas cover had been next to the cab truck as emergency services worked on the driver.
In a statement released by police this afternoon, they say the driver of the truck was a 58-year-old contractor.
Worksafe New Zealand is investigating the incident together with the police serious crash unit.
The man's name won't be released until next of kind have been notified, police say.
