Wanaka police issued $750 in fines to a tourist who was snapped crossing the centre line of the road 38 times while driving from Haast to Wanaka.
Constable Greg Nolet said police got a complaint about the person's driving on Monday night from a member of the public.
Officers found and followed the rental car in question near Wanaka and pulled it over once they saw it crossing the centre line.
The driver was issued with a $150 infringement notice.
However, yesterday, the member of the public who made the complaint showed Wanaka police photos of the car on their camera.
Police located the driver again who, "acknowledged themselves it was bad driving", Nolet said.
The driver was issued with a $600 fine for driving in a manner likely to cause damage, nuisance or injury.
