An Invercargill road sign is causing confusion amongst some residents over whether to be on the lookout for dangerous children.

The sign, on Oteramika Rd near the Rockdale Rd intersection, reads ‘Beware of Children'.

Invercargill City Council roading manager Russell Pearson said the sign was not standard and might be changed soon.

"It's consistency and standards, if we don't have that people get confused."

The sign is there to warn motorists about children crossing the road from Verdon College and Te Wharekura o Arowhenua.

However, it may not be sending the right message.

"Is it actually giving the message to the driver?" Pearson said.

Either way, people will be on the lookout for children.

"Does that mean that everybody runs and hides from them?" he said.

The Manual of Traffic Signs and Markings (MOTSAM) determines which signs are put on roads.
