Seeing a tractor rolling down a southern road is a common sight for most, but not down Invercargill's main street, much less being pulled by high school students.

But that's exactly what happened today when 22 students from Southland Boys' High School and Te Wharekura o Arowhenua pulled two 4.5 tonne tractors from the Dee and Tay St roundabout to Don St.

It was the final challenge of the eight week Cactus programme, which had the students up at 5.30am three days a week for two hours of intense military style training.

About 100 supporters, including their peers and parents turned up to cheer the students on, with some supporters running to keep up.

The tractor pull ended with a good hosing down from a fire truck.
