Desperation to avoid a driving fine caused an Invercargill man to crash his car, the Invercargill District Court was told yesterday.
Jerrald Michael Wilson, 22, unemployed, appeared before Judge Phil Moran yesterday charged with careless driving on November 8 at Lochiel.
Judge Moran said Wilson was driving in the early hours of the morning when he and three intoxicated friends approached a police breath-testing checkpoint.
Wilson then slammed on the brakes, reversed at speed and crashed the car, Judge Moran said.
In explanation, Wilson said he had recently lost his job and was desperate to avoid a fine at the checkpoint, although he did not admit being drunk. He was not breath-tested by police after the crash. Wilson was fined $600.
