A jury took only a short time to find a 27-year-old Invercargill man guilty of possessing cannabis for sale.

The jury foreman returned the verdict against Morgan James McClutchie just after 1pm yesterday, little more than two hours after Judge Kevin Phillips finished summing up at the conclusion of McClutchie's trial in the Invercargill District Court.

His lawyer Kate McHugh made an application for bail, which Judge Phillips said he would grant before issuing a caution.

"I'm going to grant you bail but you should not take any comfort from the fact I'm granting you bail – it is only because of pressure of the sentencing system," Judge Phillips said before convicting him of the charge.

McClutchie was also convicted of several other charges laid on the same day as the possession of cannabis for supply charge – August 20. They included possession of a class A controlled drug, namely LSD, and cultivation of cannabis as well as wilful obstruction and receiving.

McClutchie will reappear in the Invercargill District Court on April 1 for sentencing.
